As a film/video editor, you’ll manage material such as camera footage, dialogue, sound effects, graphics and special effects to produce a final film or video product. This is a key role in the post-production process and your skills can determine the quality and delivery of the finished result. You’ll usually work closely with the director to achieve the desired end result.

  • Proven work experience as a Video Editor
  • Solid experience with digital technology and editing software packages (e.g., Avid Media Composer, Premiere and Final Cut)
  • Demonstrable video editing ability with a strong portfolio
  • Thorough knowledge of timing, motivation and continuity
  • Creative mind and storytelling skills
  • Extraordinary attention to detail and outstanding organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills and experience interfacing with clients
  • Ability to effectively communicate ongoing project status with producers and senior artists
  • Ability to collaborate with creatives to solve production challenges and deliver the highest quality of work
  • Ability to work with creative teams to improve creative ideas and executions
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with creatives and producers
  • Work to a brief, and maybe an outline of footage and/or a shot list, script, or screenplay
  • Assemble raw footage, with camera shots, either recorded or transferred onto video tape in preparation for inputting into the computer
  • Input uncut rushes and sound, and synchronise and store them into files on the computer
  • Digitally cut files to put together the sequence of the film and decide what’s usable
  • Create a ‘rough cut’ (or assembly edit) of the programme/film and determine the exact cutting for the next and final stages and also create the final cut
  • Reorder and fine-tune the content to ensure the logical sequencing and smooth running of the film/video.
  • Suggest or select music
  • Manipulate and edit film pieces in a way that is invisible to the audience
  • Take a brief to grasp production team’s needs and specifications
  • Review shooting script and raw material to create a shot decision list based on scenes’ value and contribution to continuity
  • Trim footage segments and put together the sequence of the film
  • Ensure logical sequencing and smooth running
  • Consult with stakeholders from production to post-production process
  • Continuously discover and implement new editing technologies and industry’s best practices to maximize efficiency
